Walks on Grand Western Canal
There are long stretches of this canal in the parish, but mostly dry, so you need to go a little further afield for the stunningly beautiful real thing. Walks below are all from good quality car parks; they are free, with spaces readily available, apart from the main centre in Tiverton. As a taster, have a look at the image gallery.
  • Whipcott: A38 from Wellington toward Tiverton; turn right on dual carriageway just past Whiteball, signed Greenham, Cothay. Pass industrial units, turn left at Westleigh quarry sign, follow round the long left bend, past a farm to turn right onto the signed canal car park. Walk west past Burlescombe village, or east past lime kilns, crossing a minor road to end at a derelict lock where the canal dries up.
  • Westleigh: Further on A38, turn right at hill brow signed Burlescombe / Westleigh. Follow all the way down and park sharp left just over the canal bridge. Either way has attractive scenery, in winter look for Stonechat and Goldcrest on the east stretch.
  • Sampford Peverell: Further on A38, cross M5 roundabout, take left slip and park on the right in Peverell village free car park. Walk west for church and views, or east for Ayshford chapel which can be visited by application.
  • Halberton: Continue through Sampford Peverell for a few miles through Halberton village, turn right to signed canal car park at the white bungalow. Either way will give you superb views over Devon countryside. Kingfishers frequently seen on the west stretch.
  • Swan Neck: Continue through Halberton, then a very sharp right aftercrossing the canal bridge to signed car park. West is a rather shaded and boring tree walk, south is a good view of state of the art energy recovery plant using animal waste!
  • Tiverton: continue on to the town, or take the A36, the car park is well signed with access to visitor centre, floating cafe, boat hire, canal boat trips in season and attractive walk through residential area. Be aware of car park charge - and it can be full in high season.
